Player character Skills in Arx Fatalis.

  • Stealth - Using this skill, the player character can move silently and hide in the shadows. With a stealth value that is high enough, the player character can sneak up on enemies and take them out, or even try to pickpocket them.
  • Technical Skill - You’re all thumbs? That’s not going to help you picking locks, breaking open doors and disarming traps, but some points in this skill just might.
  • Intuition - Intuition is most aptly described as a “sixth sense” that helps you detect hidden objects, secret passages and traps. Intuition also improves your nose for a good deal, allowing you to trade more profitably, and allows you to “perceive” enemies that are using an invisibility spell – but only if the value is high enough!
  • Ethereal Link - This is no spirtiual new age hocus-pocus, this is the real thing. A strong ethereal link warns you of hostile creatures in your vicinity, and if it comes to battle, informs you of your opponent’s status. This value also determines the rate at which your mana reserves replenish.
  • Object Knowledge - Object knowledge is needed if you wish to repair armour, weapons or other items – though you will need right tools for the job too. Also influenced are your skills at brewing potions, poisoning weapons and identifying objects.
  • Magic - Without the Magic skill, you'll have no access to the myriad spells that exist in Arx. The magic incantations are divided into 10 levels – the higher the level, the more powerful the magic. To use the most intricate spells, you will need a high magic level. This value also helps build resistance to magic attacks.
  • Close Combat - Gives bonus for attack and damage when using a close combat weapon, such as a sword.
  • Projectile (projectiles / long distance weapons) - The equivalent value to close combat weapons, except it determines your skill and accuracy at using long distance weapons such as bows.
  • Defense - Of course, combat isn't just about attacking. This value determines your skill in using a shield to defend yourself from your opponent's blows. It also increases your armour class, further reducing the damage you take during battle.
